She's Got Soul

From the time I started to appreciate music, I remember falling in love with Soul & R&B. I remember having artists like Floetry, India Arie, Musiq Soulchild, Anthony Hamilton, Alicia Keys, & Erykah Badu on constant replay. I remember my  younger cousin always asking me, "What are you listening to?" and not in a good way lol. But I felt the music run through my veins and inspire me as a person. Then I started writing my own poetry...and the rest is history.

One Person that I admire a lot is Ms. Lauryn Hill. I love her voice, her style, her way of being, her rhymes, her words......and the list goes on.

For the last few years I've been anticipating her come back. Not sure if we can confirm she is officially back, but she finally has some shows lined up. Me and my sisters were privileged enough to go to a show this past Saturday.

Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed in the show for different reasons...but I can't trash talk too much because I still felt honored to be in the presence of someone who has and still does inspire me. Im grateful for the experience and will definitely be on the look out for future shows.

"We can't plan life. All we can do is be available for it" (Lauryn Hill)
"Im a mess but god is dealing with me everyday. That's why these songs are about: problem, cause and solution." (Lauryn Hill)

"I ran very fast in the wrong direction" (Lauryn Hill)
"Reality is easy. It's deception that's the hard work" (Lauryn Hill)
                                  Lauryn and her Family
"Ms.Hill got skills, that's a gift, it's real get ill, what you spit got the power to uplift a hill" (Talib Kweli)

Nelly Furtado - Manos Al Aire

This is for my Latin Pop lovers, like myself. I know this is old, but I constantly go back to this song. It's beautiful, and I know many females can relate to the lyrics. What can I say, most of us are hopeless romantics that always put our hearts and emotions first, & thats why we end up feeling hurt so often. But we put our hands in the air and surrender to love when we know its REAL......

ENJOY!

Taraji P. Henson

So, the other night I'm watching one of my favorite late night shows, Chelsea Lately, and her guest for the night was Taraji P. Henson. On the show, they showed her recent ad with Peta for their campaign "I'd rather go naked, than wear Fur." For those who don't know about Peta, they are the largest animal rights organization in the world. They focus on protecting animals from Factory Farms, Clothing Trade, Laboratories and Entertainment among other issues. I remember while I was in school, they came and gave a presentation and showed us brutal videos of how animals are skinned, killed, and tortured for fashion. Now, I was never a Fur lover but, after that I absolutely knew that I would never own any real fur. Peta and the Fashion Industry have been on an ongoing battle because many designers use animal skins in their designs. Personally, I think Peta takes extreme measures to get their point across...which is why many people turn their heads away from them. They definitely make sure their being heard, especially with these ads. I enjoy looking at the ads from this campaign, because I think they do a good job shooting them, even if I don't always agree on the way they go about stopping the issues themselves. They have other campaigns that I can't stand to look at because they are so brutally explicit.

So, Taraji is their latest celebrity to join their campaign. She is 40 years old and looks amazing....and the ad is all over the internet. Many Celebs have done the ad before her and I have to give Peta credit for definitely grabbing our attention with this campaign. This isn't about me being for or against Peta, its more or less artistically enjoying the ads for this campaign, and sharing them with you if you haven't already seen them.

Enjoy!

Get The Runway Look minus The Runway Price!

You don't need to break the bank to look amazingly put together. Styles shown on the runway are always available by other designers and at different prices...Just keep in mind a few things. First of all, BE ORIGINAL! Trends come and go each season but, STYLE is FOREVER. Once you learn how to dress for you: styles and silhouettes that flatter your body, how to mix classics with fashion trends, and personalizing it to your style ~ then your almost there. You don't have to follow every trend to be fashionable. Something that you cant buy in stores but completes your style is CONFIDENCE. When you walk down the street feeling confident about yourself, you can make a trash bag cinched at the waist with a belt look good. So Don't follow trends, but yet get inspired, and make them your own.

A few trends that were heavily influential for Fall/Winter were:

  • Faux Fur/Real Fur
  • Military Jackets
  • Boyfriend Blazers

So I wanna show you how some of these trends were shown on the runway....and how you can get them at a price that fits your budget.

Fur Trend
Dereck Lam

Forever21 $29.99

Jenny Han $159

Alberto Makali $275

Military Trend
Balmain

Free People $49.95

Banana Republic $150

Leifsdottir $348

Boyfriend Blazer Trend

Louis Vuitton

ASOS $94.82

Club Monaco $199

Theory $325

Personally, I am a fan of all three trends, especially the boyfriend blazer. The military has been inspiring fashion for years now but I definitely think this year I saw a lot more of it in jackets, bags, shoes and accessories. I've never been a fur lover, but I did find a faux fur shaggy vest that I thought was subtle enough to add to my wardrobe and didn't make me feel like a polar bear.

So these are some of my own pieces that I LOVE!!

Kensie Faux Fur Vest (Nordstrom)

Ambition Military Jacket (Nordstrom)

Halogen Boyfriend Blazer (Nordstrom)

Hope you Enjoyed! See you guys soon!

Love,  Belkis.

Who's Ready For Spring ?/!?

I can't say I am yet, but it sure was fun looking at what the designers were showing on the runway for Spring. My absolute favorite season is autumn. I love my boots, in every shape, height, color, style....You name it ~ I have it....and I love them! I mix & match them with my skirts, dresses, jeans, leggings, & even do a funky look with a pair of shorts and some fun tights. But anyway, back on Spring....Spring is always exciting because the colors are brighter & more fun, the fabrics are softer and flirty, and the prints are so much fun to play with. In one season, you can expect to see many different trends to be shown. Thats when you get the opportunity to play with trends and determine what works for you and what doesn't. But never be afraid to try something new, create your own style, and just go into it with an open mind. Why Not? Express yourself through your clothes. So lets get to it. I picked four different trends that I Love for this up coming Spring.

Enjoy ;)

A Splash of Color: For Spring, designers were showing bold and bright colors and they weren't afraid to mix them in ways that you'd never even dream of. You'll definitely be demanding attention in these beautiful spring hues.

Prints: A print can be subtle or it can be bold. But for spring, it looks like most designers decided to take the risk.....Are You?
